I will start by saying that I don’t usually read books like this. First off, the author is male and I prefer my romance books soppy and written by a woman. I’m ashamed to say for all this time I have been WRONG. This book was everything I expect of a romance, and I think I enjoyed it more because it was written by a man.

The writing was flawless, it’s what grabbed me first off, just how perfect the writers prose was. It is seamless and sparkling. An absolute joy to read.

It was that that got me through the first twenty-five per cent of the story. I admit I found the story a little hard to get into. Once the main character, Joel Smith, had reached the point where the ‘real’ story started I was hooked and finished the book in two days.

The Mine isn’t just any time travel book. It’s a beautiful, intricately woven tale about a group of friends living in 1940’s America, with just one impostor thrown into the mix. Joel Smith accidentally found himself travelling back in time and hanging out with his Grandma.

Joel is a wonderful character, smart, funny, cocky, and gorgeous in my minds eye. The way he pulled his time travel off was realistic, comical and charming. I’m not ashamed to say I fell in love with him. The rest of the gang were three dimensional, filled with purpose and realistic for the decade.

Of course, Joel falls for one of grannies best mates and the story takes us through their complicated love affair. That’s where the story started in earnest for me, and from that point it never stopped for a moment.

The plot kept me glued until the end, it was like a tug of war. “Will he, won’t he? Will she, won’t she?”. Of course, I won’t spoil the story, but I’m laying the blame where it’s due for the fact that my house looks like a bomb has hit it. I couldn’t put it down until I found out exactly what happened in the end. Heldt, you’re in big trouble! The end left me satisfied with that warm fuzzy feeling, thats all I’ll say on the matter.

The cover is as lovely and intriguing as the book itself. It certainly inspired me to read it.

All that said. I award the lovely read 4 pints of lager and a packet of crisps.

(Thats 4.5 stars to everyone else 😉 )

  1. That was quite the review Lucy and sounds like a great read. When I finished your review of course I had to check the Author out, and OMG every book is Time Travel. Vampires are #1 for me , but Time Travel comes in at a close second. So what did I do you ask??? I bought all 5 of his books, all because of your review. Thank you so much for sharing!! ❤
